97 Wrangler Electical Noise

I have a '97 Wrangler with 4 cyclinder. When the engine is running it
generates a lot of electrical noise. I can hear it on the radio as a
t-t-t-t-t-t and even more annoying it interfers with my garage door
opener ... I have to shut the engine off to raise or lower the garage
door! (I sound like a couch potato but it is annoying).

Any ideas and recomendations to fix? I have replaced the plugs/wires. Maybe the fuel pump? Suggestions?

Re: 97 Wrangler Electical Noise

Not sure how the garage door interferance figures in to this but a bad diode in the alternator will cause RF noise in the radio so you might start with that.

Sometimes a capacitor installed in the circuit causing the noise will help.

You might pull some fuses while the engine is running and the radio is playing. ('course wouldn't work to pull the power to the fuel pump)

Make sure that the alternator is NEVER disconnected while the engine is running.

Re: 97 Wrangler Electical Noise

If the sound increases in speed as you race the engine, it sounds like it will be in the plugs/wires.
Is it a slow tick (from one cylinder) or rapid(from coil)? You said you replaced the plugs/wires already (did you include the coil wire?) so I would check the coil itself for any loose connections.

DO you have a nextel phone??? It sounds like the interference a nextel will make. Could also be plugs wires or alternator

Re: 97 Wrangler Electical Noise

Also, if you used NON resistor spark plugs, it would cause the same problem.

Might be a bad ground someplace too on something like this. Could pick up intereference through the speakers like turn signal popping, engine revving, etc. Man that is one annoying problem!
