the total story

This is a typical day with the car
(manual trans)
clutch down, start right up, no problems, sounds normal
in like 5 minutes, it starts to idle to about 2rpm, then stays that way, so inbetween gear changes, it spikes up, and u can smell gas.
so its already riding rough
then when i stop the car and turn it off, and then attempt to turn it back on, it just turns over, doesn't start. I have to wait at least 30mins b4 it would start again, so even if i had to put gas into the gas and i drove it, i would have to leave the car on, so now i buy gas in containers so i avoid that
My buddy (mechanic) was the one who told me to change the caps and rotors, he also said it was corroded and it could be the problem
i'm just close to ditching the car entirely and gettin the wagon saturn
so what do u think

what year/model/mileage?

first, have you replaced the ECT? it can cause a wire aray of problems such as this. next i would look for a sticking IAC or EGR and vaccum leaks. clean corrision from the DIS system may also help.

Re: WTB saturn ignition coil - read i have questions

i can't think of any specific problems that directly relate for that year/model. but...

if you have the first design key, multiuple electrical problems are possible - http://www.saturnfans.com/photos/sho...p/photo/15889/

and the 97 fuel pump can lose resudual pressure after shutoff. this results in a excessive crank time, but as in maybe 10 or 15 seconds, not 30 minutes. and is more likey to happen after the engine sits for a long time(overnight). to confirm this is not the problem cycle the key on and off several times, this should prime the fuel system to speed up starting.
