Daewoo Espero, how do I open the hood/bonnet?

Simple question really. I have just bought a 2nd hand espero daewoo and am unable to open the hood. I have pulled the lever under the steering wheel, but cannot open the hood after that. On previous cars I would have put my hand under the front edge of the hood and pulled a lever but on this car you cant even get your hand under it, the gap is too narrow.

the bonnet release is just in side the foot well next to the drivers door.
