I basically have the same problem with my 98. I had the problem this spring which I though was due to just needing a balancing I had that done= didn't fix the problem. So I took it to a different shop who did another balancing= didn't fix the problem. So this shop went ahead and did an alignment= didn't fix the problem. I eventually was told ( after paying this place too much money ) that the 'bands'( i beleive that is what he told me) were bad. So I ended up having to spend MORE money on 4 new tires. I just bought the tires back in May of this year. Have put on approx. 7000 on them and now the shaking has come back. I am hoping and praying that its just time for a balance and rotation and it's not a c/v joint or ball bearing problem. If anyone thinks it could be one of the later problems, let me know! The shaking starts at about 55mph and will smooth out at about 70.

Re: 98 grand am shakes at 55-65mph
I think you can eliminate bearings as the problem. Bearings would be a continuously increasing, pulsating, dull rumbling/roar. After 7000 miles, it would seem it may be time for a balance / rotation. Especially a rotation. But like I said, it's deffinately not bearings from what you've said. By the way, welcome to the forum.

Re: 98 grand am shakes at 55-65mph
Check your tires. You could possibly have a flat spot in them that could cause the car to shake

Re: 98 grand am shakes at 55-65mph
sometimes the wheel weights fall off. I also end up with a 58-63mph shake. Get my wheels rebalanced/rotated and it goes away. Its just enough shake to make u drive faster, 63-65 and the next thing u know, a cop flys past the other way. damn'it! LOL! hope this helps u Armybrat. \,,/

Thanks all. Going for a balance/rotation.
