Unhappy 2000 JCG Won't Start!

I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo and it seems to be having some electrical problems. I went to leave work yesterday and it wouldn't start at all. All the gagues were going crazy when I tried even after I took the key out of the ignition. It was also making a clicking noise. It will start if you jump it but if you turn it off it will not turn back on. We got it started so I could go home but on my way the odometer started flashing on and off and my speakers were making a popping noise. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?

a bad battery has been known for causing the guages to go crazy (jumping all about) like you describe.

That's what I am thinking too because once you jump it it stays running. If it was the alternator it wouldn't stay running, would it?

Did the battery service fix the problem? My 1999 GC is in the shop with the same problem. I went to start it and the lights went out, then went dim -the gauges went crazy, and the there was a clicking noise from the fuse panel. I was able to disconnect and reconnect the battery cables to get it started.
The service shop has had it for 2 days and cannot find anything wrong with other than it needed a battery service. They said there may be bad connections. I am worried it is more of a problem than that. Is your jeep still working OK?
