Thinking bout buying my best friends 79 trans am with the original 400ci engine (89k miles) new edelbrock 4 barrel carb/its 4 speed manual/turbo 350tranny/new flowmasters/new "screaming chicken" sticker/and a custom Sweet ass Speaker box me and him built few months back, its apolstered and everything--looks professionally done.
He cant afford the gas prices here ($2.37p/g) to keep it and wants to give me a sweet deal for 7.2k. Im posting cuz im a camaro man all the way but this deal seems too sweet to give away----just tell me what u guys think and hit me back. Mikes71Cam. |

Re: 79 Chevy
It's a T/A what's the prob? Aside from the price.
It's not like you were confiessing to thinking about buying a Honda or anything

Re: 79 Chevy
Make SURE you know what's wrong with it before you buy that sumbitch.
7,200 sounds a tad high unless it's in damn good shape. Watch around the windows, top inside the trunk and INSIDE around the t-tops (if so equipped) and door posts. Every single 78-79 T/A I looked at was ate up with rust where you had to look real hard to see. Had to pull back the rugs and plastic... just be really suspicious of the car has a damp / musty smell to it. |

Re: 79 Chevy
pee in it, if it dribbles out the bottom you have issues.....
jk, if its as pretty as you say it is, and its got that few miles on the odometer, it might be worth around 6k, if hes had the interior done, thats a big cost out of the way, the engine should still be strong with that many miles assuming its ben well taken care of. just make sure it hasnt seen high rpms. the pontiac engines were not chevy engines, they werent built to rev to the moon, they have huge main bearings which heat up fast at high rpms and will spin themselves loose. happened to my uncles tri power 389.

Re: 79 Chevy
Deals that seem to sweet almost ALWAYS are. I was thinking 5000-6000 range.. IF the body and interior are in damn good shape and the motor and trans are decent. You can pick those things up around here for anywhere up to $2000 in various shape, all run ok, but the bodies are just totally ruined. I'd be more concerned about the body than the motor and trans, but for 7200, it better be in damn good shape.

Howdy. I'm new to the site, but not to F-bodies. I have owned, built and driven them all my life. It's good that you have a little history on the car, but BEWARE: If you are not up to speed with what you are buying, get someone you trust that is to check it out. These cars usually live hard lives.
I was always taught, that a good deal is when both parties leave thinking they took the other to the cleaners. Please don't be offended by my saying so, but take into consideration that twenty-six years have gone by since it rolled off the assembly line. $7,200 would have been a pretty good deal then. It probably went for around $8,000 new. Here in Eastern Washington state, where rust is practically unheard of, a second generation F-body in pretty decent shape would go for about $3,000-$4,000. I paid that for my sweet one-owner (I am the second owner) '78 in 1989 and the going price hasn't change much since then. Sounds to me like you would be paying an extra $4,200 for an intake, carb and speaker box that you helped build. But it's like I said before - If you part feeling good about your purchase then it's a good deal. I don't mean to discourage you from buying, just make sure you have your ducks in a row and get him to come down in price! Best of luck to you! |
