Question What's a fair price range for a new automatic transmission?

Hey, I was stupid and ignored the check engine light, and eventually my 2000 ford escort zx2 stopped moving. When I pressed the gas the engine roared, but the car did not move. Then I found out it was out of transmission fluid, so I added more, but that didn't help, so I took it into a ford dealership.

They said the entire transmission needed replaced, and they quoted a price of $2,200-$3,000. Seeing as I only paid $3,000 for the car, I can't believe that this is a fair price. And I've tried getting a quote from a couple transmission specialist places, but none of them give a quote below two grand.

I was just wondering if this is a normal price for this situation, or are they just taking advantage of a car stupid 21 year old?

Any thoughts? Thanks

$2K-3K is pretty much the going rate for a rebuild. I just spent $2100 getting the AT in my 98 Rodeo rebuilt at 103K miles. I don't know if I'd put that much into an Escort.

Good Luck
