Well - if you've never driven a truck before - then you need to understand there is no weight on the backend normally. If its raining - you can't do jackrabbit starts with no weight in the backend - and not expect it to "kick out" on you. Momentum going sideways - plus applying accelerator - plus rain reduced friction and no backend weight - will do it every time. Ease of the accelerator until you're thru the turn - or you'll be a Dukes of Hazzard lookalike

throw some weight in the back , make sure the tires are good, and drive easy in rain and snow.

Re: driving in the rain

OEM tires are a joke. Replace with either Michilen LTX M/S or Bridgestone Deuler A/T Revo. Ease off the gas until then, you get used to it. With my OEM Goodyears behind the G80 locker, it is near impossible to start uphill without breaking the whole backend loose! You get used to it, then you start liking it =).

Re: driving in the rain

Yeah, there's a trick about driving a truck in the rain I learned 10 years ago on my old Ford Ranger... don't step on the gas when starting from a stop; ease (and I can't stress that enough) the gas pedal down. Take off like grandma

Re: driving in the rain

Also something that should be taught to all, the street is slickest for the first 15 minutes and 1/2 inch of rain due to the oil and misc being washed out of the surface. All surfaces are porus and hold junk until it gets washed out. So point is make sure you can control your vehicle until your tires get better traction.

Re: driving in the rain

Makes me glad I have the camper shell and the traction assist gizmo. Added weight on the bed + automatic traction assist = less tire spin for me

Re: driving in the rain

One of my first cars was a POS '70 something LeBaron. One winter before the streets were plowed, I pulled out of a side street on to the main road. I did all the right things, very light gas, let the car move itself, ect.. and then I did a 360 in the middle of the main road!! Let me tell ya, It got the heart pumpin a little bit. Its one thing doing donuts in an empty parking lot, but a complete spin out on a busy street... well that's another, LOL. After I spun out, I just sat there in the road for about a minute before I went ahead off agian....

On another note.... Definetly put some weight in the back.... I had a date with a girl I just met, first time I went over to pick her up at her place, it had snowed all the previous week. side streets are completly horrible. I get to her house and to my dismay she lives on a HUGE hill. I tried once, I tried twice, I tried three times to get up Her driveway, but could not do it. I could only get about halfway up before the truck would start sliding backwards. So, I had to park it on the hill, and explain to her why I parked so far away. He we got into the truck it started sliding down the hill.... That was our last date....
