Oil Weight Question...
okokok...
Before we go any further... this is for my wife's Kia Sedona minivan - 3.5l V6. I went to Numbnuts (known to some as Pepboys) and bought Purolator oil filters (thank you IROC) and Valvoline oil, 5W30 because that is what the book on the rack said is recommended for my wife's van based on the operating environment. (100+ down to 0 degrees fahrenheit, or something like that). The dealer said to use 5W30.. because 10w30 etc it too heavy an oil for a small motor like a 3.5l v6, and a couple other people said the same thing. For some reason I decided to look it up in the owner's manual, and it said that 5W30 was for like -40 to 60 degrees fahrenheit operating environment. So now I'm like "SHIT! Now I gotta change the son-of-a-bitchin oil two days in a row!" Who in the hell is right??? Based on the grammar in the owner's manual, it very well could be wrong, it reads like it was written by a 6 year old dyslexic with sleep deprivation issues. (No offense intended to anyone who has or has dealt with that.) WTF??? Should I change it again and use 10w40 in it or even 10w30??? It has been below 90 here like 4 days in the last 2 months. Is the 5w30 going to hold up??? |

Re: Oil Weight Question...
It will be alright until your next oil change. And 10W30 isn't going to hurt you wifes engine. At the shop i work at, we use Mobil 10W30 Drive clean in our pumps as our bulk oil. We use that for almost every oil change etc... Unless it calls for synthetic.

Re: Oil Weight Question...
So.... Use 10w30 until it starts fall/winter when it gets cold and THEN use 5w30 till it's gone. AND THEN use 10w30 all the time???

Re: Oil Weight Question...
I use 10w30 year round in Chicago's climatic swings and have no problems what so ever.
Only thing is recently I switched to high mileage synthetic in daily driver which is 3.8L but still equivalent weight. |

I use 5W30 in the winter and 20W50 in the summer, but I'm running a *slightly* modified quad.
