2000 Xterra Timing Belt and Rattling/Vibrating Sound

My 2000 Xterra has 146K miles on it and I have yet to change the timing belt. I guess I should be scared that it will break right? What type on resonable replacement costs am I looking at to replace it? The dealership quoted me $900-$1000...

Also, upon accelerator there is a distinct metal vibrating /rattling sound coming fromthe bottom of the vehicle? Could there be a couple of screws loose somewhere or something? Should I be worried? Please help.

Uh, yeah, you're on borrowed time on the timing belt. Price isn't unreasonable, but call around.

Rattles are likely the exhaust heat shields, common problem, read up.

I called the local Merchants Auto and they quoted Approx. $550 to change the timing belt along with the other belts and the water pump...does that sound too cheap?

Watch can I do about the heat shields? Can I take them off or repair them? Where are they located? Does any one have a diagram showing where they are?

When I said "read up" I meant it's been discussed here countless times, find the discussions and read them.

Dealers around here only charge $375 for the changing the timing belt. I wonder if they anticipate damage since you waited until 146k to change it, and hence the high quote.

In regards to the vibration, it probably sounds like metal on metal and is coming from under the drivers seat. Crawl underneat (after the vehicle has cooled) and check out the exhaust pipe & heat shield. They have a tendancy to break/loosen. A couple of $.50 hose clamps fixed our problem!

I agree with OffroadX - $550 to do the timing belt is about what you're looking at - it's a fair amount of labor plus parts. Price shouldn't have anything to do with "anticipated" damage. Have it done ASAP. If it breaks while you're driving you will be looking at quite a bit more. Good luck.
