Please help Don't know what to do!
Alright here's the deal I just had my Th350 rebuilt about a month ago I had the shop do it. Around a week or so ago I developed a pretty good size leak I figured that it was the main rear seal and set out to drop the transfer case and replace the seal. So I call up my brother for an extra set of hands and hit the auto parts store for all the seals, gaskets, etc. that I required. When I crawled underneath my rig to start I drained the fluid out of the transfer case discovering that my NP203 was filled with discolored ATF(believe its 10-w30 and ATF mixed) If I am not mistaken 10-w30 is the correct fluid. so I scratch my head and move on. I remove the driveshaft and then unbolt and lower transfer case down and out of the way I then proceed to support the tranny and remove the adapter plate and when I get to the bottom passenger side bolt I discover that it is not tight puzzled I remove and try to retorque the bolt it won't tighten, stripped out! After all that here are my questions what can I do to fix the stripped out hole I have never had to deal with this before and second any ideas on why and or how, what I should about the ATF in my NP203? In addition the rear seal Is in good shape, just was not seated right because of the bolt. Any and all ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Re: Please help Don't know what to do!
You know what I would do?
I would put it all back together and take it to the tranny shop that did the rebuild and break it off in their a$$!!! Don't you have a warranty from the rebuild? That's the only answer I have sorry. |

Re: Please help Don't know what to do!
warranty only covers internal tranny parts can't take it back, only option is to fix it on my own or buy whole new setup! Really can't afford whole new setup!

You can fix the stripped out bolt hole with a heli-coil. I would have the trans shop fix the ATF mess qas it seam to me that would be in their best intrest asa the ATF may cause an internal part to fail. |

Re: Please help Don't know what to do!
I'm not to worried about the ATF in the transfer case it has only been driven like that for a total of about 40miles and I have already drained it out and refilled with proper fluid. I have never heard of a Heli-coil where would I be able to get one?

Re: Please help Don't know what to do!
For my 90 K1500, ATF is the proper fluid for the transfer case; although, I have read that the newer AutoTrak-II can be used as well.
Heli-coils are sold at most auto parts stores. They are sold based on the thread size. See http://www.emhart.com/products/helicoil.html //2000CAYukon |

Re: Please help Don't know what to do!
Yeah your right on your '90 K1500 ATF would be the right fluid because if i'm not mistaken you have a NP208. my '76 with the NP203 the proper fluid is 10-w30 engine oil. Thanks for the info on the heli-coil I will give that a shot!

To install a heli-coil , you have to drill out the hole a little bigger then turn in the heli-coil and seat them when in all the way, by tapping on the three outer pins driving them in. This coil will now be your threads. You need access to drill it out and you have to drill straight. You might need some "mechanical guy" help on this one.
If the tranny shop loosened the bolt that is stripped to do the work they did, go back and rag on them for not telling you, and then get them to fix it!! |

Re: Please help Don't know what to do!
I was on the phone with the shop owner this morning for an hour and a half the @$$ just kept tellin me the same thing over and over "the warranty only covers internal part involved in the rebuild if one of the mounting bolt holes was stripped out it was like that when I brought it in or I did it myself later on." I gave him a few choice words and hang up! So i'm pretty much stuck in a rutt, with only myself to get me out! Thanks a lot for all the info on the helicoil though!
