1994 Grand Caravan -Mystery Stall

About 2 years ago my '94 Grand Caravan started to mysteriously stall out while I'm driving. It only did it once in a while and I could start it back up in anywhere from a few seconds to about three minutes.

It's gotten now to where it stalls two to four times a day. It's generally within the first 10 miles after the van has first been started.

Over the past two years I've had the van to a Dodge dealer service center and two garages. Nobody can find the problem or even cause it to happen.

Has anyone seen this before? Can anyone lead me to a cause?

My '90 Grand Caravan did the same thing in 94 LOL. It would be driving along just fine, when all of a sudden it would just suddenly stop running..most of the time when it was at low RPM's or sitting at a stop. I took it into the local Chrysler dealership, and they replaced what they called the "Auto Idle System", and its been just fine since. If that doesnt do it for you, I would have the connection checked at the fuel pump (as those are electric on that model), and clean out all fuel filters/lines. Feel free to ask me questions at any time, because I love Chryslers, and if I don't know how to fix it, I'm sure I can find someone who does, and I can relay the message!

what engine do you have? If you have the 3.3 or 3.8 V6, it could be a faulty crankshaft position sensor.

Thanks for the info. I'll do some checking into the Auto Idle System first and then take it back in.

I've already had the fule pump and filter replaced in hopes of solving the mystery stall some time ago. The was Goober the mechanic's diagnosis. It didn't work, of course.

The engine is a 3.3 V6. I'm open to consider any ideas as to the possible cause only, as someone who has learned a very expensive lesson, I'll look into everything before I go to the dealer.

I've heard of this happening to other people so why couldn't the dealer or the mechanics find the cause? The dealer even told me that he never heard of anything like this happening before. He then implied that I didn't know what I was talking about because he couldn't duplicate the problem.

Thanks, guys, for your help. It's appreciated.

It would be key to know if it is a sputter and stall or if it just dies out suddenly as if the key was turned off. If it is the latter then I'd certainly change out the crank and cam sensors as a start - certainly a lot less expensive and a lot more likely then the fuel pump!

Re: 1994 Grand Caravan -Mystery Stall

this might sound silly but i had the same problem with a 2000 chrysler stalling then starting ( sometimes i had to put my foot down on the gas heavily and then it would power up) and quitting gauges(the enginge light had been on for awhile and the code reader wouldn't readon my car). my dad had me put fuel injection cleaner in the gas tank and i have only been using chevron gas, amazingly it worked, ( it took a week of running the old fluid out) but the gauges are seemingly unrelated.
try the fuel injection cleaner and use better gas it could just be a plugged feul line.

Another thing to check is where the air intake duct meets the engine(the duct goes from the air filter to the engine) If you have an air leak where it meets the engine, it bypasses the MAF and other sensors throwing the PCM into a tail spin with fuel mixture. Just a thought.

My dad's '93 Dakota had the same problem. It turned out that one of the connectors to the computer was warped and did not make very good contact with the computer. When the weather was hot and he was idling for a long time with the A/C on, the engine would suddenly quit (like you turned off the key). Sometimes you could't start it for 20 or 30 min. I noticed the warped connector one day so he took the Dak into the Dodge dealer. They replaced the connector and he has never had any trouble (with the connector) since.
