Mexican air cooled beetles, carb probs
Hey guys
My first post here. I currently live in Mexico and am surrounded by air cooled beetles. I am currently trying to clean up a 1982 but am having a problem with hesitation. When you open the throttle hard the motor tries to rev, pops, hesitates then just dies. If you open the throttle in increments it will rev, but is reluctant. I changed the plugs, contacts and capacitor, have timed it as I think it should be timed with info from another web site(I don't have a manual). Using the main engine pully I used the big fat mark as 0' and the only other mark which is on the opposite side of the pulley closer to the engine I lined up with the centre seam of the engine case. I then timed the engine with the basic method. I set the points in increments from 40 > 55 (mm) but it has not helped. I am currently cleaning up the carb which is a solex 34pict-3 and need to know how to check the electronic cold start is functioning properly, also how many turns is corret on the adjustment screws. I hope I have supplied enough info and will supply more as requested. I hope you can help. Many thanks Mex-i

Re: Mexican air cooled beetles, carb probs
Look on the right side of the carb, there should be a spring. The spring should be pushed tight and its probably not. push the spring away from you and you will see that the spring is held by something on the metal make sure that the piece is holding the spring tight.

For what it's worth, when the '68 VW Bugs were produced, Mexico got all the machinery from Germany to produce the '67 and earlier VW's. Don't know if this still applies, but way back then a "New" Mexican VW Bug was nothing more than an old VW but produced later on. Also, the Mexican VW's lacked fuel emission controls which is why Mexican VW Bugs were not allowed to be licensed in the United States. At least this was the situation between '68 and around '74. With this information perhaps you can find a repair manual that applies to your vehicle.
