Selec-Trac or Quadra-Trac or Quadra-Drive and engines

Selec-Trac - Quadra-Trac - Quadra-Drive
(Command-Trac got discontinued in 1996)

What is the difference between these setups. And which one is the best?

Which engine is better and more reliable, the
5.9L V8 (245HP, 345 FT/LBS 0-60=7.3SEC with the 3.73 gears)
4.7L V8 (230HP, 295 FT/LBS)
5.2L V8 (220HP, 300 FT/LBS)

Re: Selec-Trac or Quadra-Trac or Quadra-Drive

Might sink some cold hard cash into a Atlas II, with Warns Full Floating D44's with ARB Air Lockers. On a 5.2, since the 5.9 is on the newer models ('98+) and will cost more, and harder to diagnos and repair.

Re: Selec-Trac or Quadra-Trac or Quadra-Drive

I have seen that site before. A good plan to base a build up on.

I would go with the 5.2L myself. (not that a 5.9 hasn't been runnin around in my mind lately.....)

There are a pile of 93-4-5's around calgary but I'd go for the 96-7's because they seem better finished to me - and a better 249 transfer case with the viscous coupler and all. Seems there is always one or two at Graham Auctions on Saturdays.......

I've seen where it was mentioned that the 242 has a narrower chain than the 249. Not sure if they are all like that, but I think that the 249 came mostly with the 5.2L...

The idea of part time 4wd and 2wd positions appeals to me but for my wife on the street in the winter, the no hastle of the fulltime is the way to go....

A kid I know had a JGC larado Upcountry identical to mine. He put in a 3" lift kit and larger tires. Was too lazy to put the last bracket in to drop the steering linkage and wondered why he had the DW...He also promptly blew the transmission - for other reasons. Wasn't a well thought out start to the project.

What ever you do, a build like this should include upgrading the CV joints in the front axle to standard type ujoints only I would do it sooner than what his plan indicates..

A worthwhile goal - go for it!!!!
