Lien troubles.

Help I bought a car last year froma friend and i didnt know anything about liens or anything like that i bought it from him for 2500 dollars but i paid him in payments and he would hold the title till i paid him in full and i would drive the car . well we went to the dmv and we registered and insured it in my name and he kep the title in his we filled out some form for it well anyway i have been driving the car for a year now and i decided to sell the car and i went to check the lien out on ny dmv and it shows there is still a lien on it and he told me it was off well now i go to give hima call and his phone gets shut off and i have a buyer who wants it and idont know if it will effect the sale i have the title and its in the sellers name and he signed it off to me and i havnt transfered it into my name i was just gonna pass on the title but i dont wanna screw anybody on this im sure i already got screwed but someone please tell me what to do. oh and i talked to the bank and they said that they need to contact the seller about the car and that the lien is still valid. and also can you guys give me a carfax on my car please mail it to me at Lilcoatman @ yahoo .com please.
