how to increase fuel economy
i was just wondering about cheap ways to increase fuel economy. I know free flowing intake/exhaust can help and that changing the spark plugs and oil should help but what else? better ignition system, lightening the car (as well as the driver losing a few pounds lol), using synthetic oil, increasing compression (maybe not very cheap). would advancing the timing help?
if anyone could notify me of something else, im thinking of buying a muscle car (it's a chevelle with a 6 cyl, just wondering how to get better mileage until i could afford a big block) and it's carbed, how much would it cost to upgrade to fuel injection? any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Re: how to increase fuel economy
Chevelles are heavy cars, its going to be hard to get good gas mileage with any motor. Basically I would keep it stock (good air filter, exhaust), do a good tune up, but keep your foot off the gas.

Re: how to increase fuel economy
the car currently has a 6cyl, until i can afford to swap in a 454 i want to save money so i want cheap ways to increase the fuel economy of the current engine, once i can afford the big block, then i dont care about fuel efficiency, i just want performance. this is mostly a car that i would keep in good shape (because apparently it is in good condition) and out of the junkyard, it doesn't cost that much and i dont want to have to go searching for one later on when there's one at my disposal. oh and would a bigger carb (more airflow) help fuel efficiensy if i didn't hammer it and used some tame (fuel saving) driving habits?

Re: how to increase fuel economy
a bigger carb would cause you to get worse gas mileage. Why do you think chrysler started putting tiny 2 barrels on huge V8's in the 80's? The best thing you could do is to tune your carb to run as lean as possible without detonating or hesitating.

Re: how to increase fuel economy
Your Chevy 6 cylinder came with a 1 barrel carb. Just make sure everything is in good tune, tires properly inflated and good front end alignment. Maybe a couple extra degrees of advance as long as it doesn't ping. Then drive it real easy. You could probably get a couple of MPG with other improvements (exhaust, fuel injection, special cams, etc.) But then you'll be spending more than you save on fuel so what's the point?

Re: how to increase fuel economy
how much would fuel injection cost for something like that?
also, the exhaust system would be for the big block in advance (no headers just remove cats(if it has any) and then straightback to the mufflers) just so that could buy it in advance. and i know that driving it slowly and that stuff is the best way how many mpg should i expect with good driving habits, exhaust, good tuning and a few degrees of advance? |
