Question 1993 Escort keeps running with key out

I have a two door 1993 escort that keeps running when I take the key out or at least the starter keeps grinding. Even with the key out of the car it does this in park and neutral. It doesn't do it in drive or reverse. I can start the car without the key. I can start the car easily, but it won't go forward in drive after starting. I have to put it in overdrive then after it gets going I can put it in drive and go as usual. Is it the ignition or someone said theres a neutral ground switch?

Might want to replace your ignition switch as well as your lock tumbler and keys , will probly fix up all your problems there. Your local parts store should be able to help you with both those items.

Sounds like the ignition switch is bad. If it were me, I'd just switch over to toggle switches.

Your problem with the overdive sounds like a transmission problem. There is a "Neutral Safety Switch" that only allows the engine to be started in neutral or park. That wouldn't affect the forward movement. Regardless of whether you are in 'Drive' or 'Overdrive' the car still will be starting in 1st gear. It's possible a linkage is out of adjustment and when you select 'drive' you are actually not completely in drive. That's what I'd check first.

I think removing the key while its running is an ignition problem, stay away from your transmition. Odds are there is no problem there , at least not one that has to do with your keys.
