Lightbulb 1995 Safari Rear hatch won't open

After spending a couple of hours sweating in the back of my van trying to figure out how to get at the rear hatch latches I gave up and searched the net and this is the best site. To open a stuck rear hatch- remove the handle from the inside.step 1- push on the center of the two end caps while prying the top of it with a small screw driver. step 2 remove the bolts holding the handle and thats it, there's the two rods controlling the latch. Thanks momn8or.

Does this eliminate the problem or will I have to replace the switch. Last week the rear defogger would come on wgen I pressed the rear hatch switch. Now this morning the rear wiper quit working. Now I am going out to try your solution to open the hatch.
