Replacing Transmission on 96 Lumina
I'm thinking about trying to get a used transmission and replacing the one in my 96 Lumina myself. The transmission place said its a 4T60E transmission, which is pretty common.
Is this something a normal shadetree wanna-be should attempt? or is there alot of special tools or techniques that I can't figure out with a Haynes manual? When I'm looking for a used one, am I just looking for a 4T60E? or are there different variations of those? I've also seen a couple places that sell a book/video for rebuilding one of these. Any comments on that? Thanks for any advice you can give me. Please tell me if I'm going to be over my head (and why). |

You must pull the entire front frame from the car. Hang the engine so it don't fall out while the frame is out. Other than that, its just nuts and bolts. Sort of...
There are a couple variations. Engine sizes, and gear ratios (not just in final drive) that must match vehicle computer. |

I do not have it with me here at work, but I have the book with the correct codes (There is a plate on the side of all 4T60E trannys that tells what it fits) and you need to see the correct code plate or it will not work. Luminas have a 333 output and a higher stall (2050 rpm) than most, and they are somewhat unique in that way. The wrong trans will definately fit, but I guarantee you'll get codes and wierd driving issues. Email me and I'll get you the code plate info. The actual labor is another story, so I must warn you that you have to be careful with disconnecting the steering rack and how you hang the engine. Be prepared for some tight fits and have a GOOD set of high jackstands. Joe |
