on a scale of one to ten (one being easyest ten being hardest) how hard would the following be:

1) 2wd to 4wd

2) automatic tranny to manual

3) rear drums to discs

depends completely on the application but:

1)10

2)5

3)4

If you say the first one is a 10, how could you say the second is a 5??

2 is part of 1

the only additional requirement for 1 is swapping in a 4wd front end...which is a bolt on if taken from a similar vehicle.

If you have no idea what your doing, I might say 1 is a "10", but then I would also say that 2 is an "8" or "9", due to the fact that you have to have new drive lines made (assuming you can't do them yourself) , make room/mounts for the t-case, etc...

I personally would say this stuff is pretty easy and straight forward due to the fact that vertually no fabrication skills are neccessary (if you find a vehicle that's ecactly the same...w/ 4wd)

I've seen number 1 and 2 done over time, I never helped out much other than handing tools to my friend's dad but he did it to a 70's Chevy 1 ton and as long as you have donor parts it didn't look all that complicated. Swapping out a tranny and a t-case on older trucks can be done in a couple hours. But putting a manual in a truck that had an auto would take up a lot of time and effort.

First off, why bother converting 2wd to 4wd? just go out and buy a 4x4 sure it can be done. But if you dont know how to do it then you have to pay a mechanic to do it. And it will cost a hell of a lot. They sell rear drum conversion kits for $1,000. Man to auto, again this will cost alot of money if you need someone else to do it. You will need equipment that only shops have, welder.

Just go out and buy yourself an Automatic 4x4, and buy the conversion kit

i decided keep i the auto tranny in and keep the rear drums but i plan on converting it to 4wd by the winter y? u might ask well i cant afford to seel this truck and buy a new one plus its got a 500 in it and a th-400 i've heard of people putting a t-case behind this tranny and i know a guy who's done it before thattcan help me w/ it but im in the process of moving now so it might be on hold for a while

it wouldnt be hard to do a 4wd swap. its as easy as adding a mount for a divorced case and an axle. prolly 2 days work if u know what u are doing. also in most cases its cheaper to convert a 2wd truck to 4wd then buying a 4wd truck from the begining

yea and like i said im gonna do all the work my self w/ the help of a couple of buddies i found a guy that makes axles t-cases and trannies and is gonna hook me up w/ one for chep ill keep u guys updated on the progress of this project and hopefully get some pictures
