i ran out of gas today ( ithink). well anyhow i was about 100 yards from a station so i got a push and put twenty dollars in. well, i had to get it towed home, on the way i bought a filter and fuel pump. but after reading some of these posts i am mildly conerned it could be more to it than that. any suggestions? i checked the fuse box under the dash and checked the connections under the tank. the pump just doesn't come on at all. i could always hear it before and now ..... nothing.

It may have seized up from lack of fuel. Fuel acts as a lubricant and coolant for the high speed, high pressure pumps in these trucks. When you run out of gas, it's like running with no engine oil, wears it out and burns it up quick. One trick to try is to get an assistant to turn the key to the run position. The truck will signal the pump for two seconds to prime up the injectors and then shuts off. Within those two seconds, hitting the bottom of the tank dead center with a soft face hammer may temporarily get the pump to spin again. Note I said temporarily... swap it as soon as you are able to since you have the pump in hand. I hope you bought a GM OEM fuel pump - aftermarket units rarely last long for some reason.

EDIT: This just came to mind - but check your fuel pump relay too. I do not know what it is like on other models, but temporarily swapping it for an A/C or climate control relay will help diagnose if it's a relay issue. (They are one in the same on my '95 but for some reason, they double the cost of the same replacement part # if it's put in a fuel application. Maybe they are filled with platinum windings or some other nonesense.)

Did you prime the system again?

With all the fuel used up, you will have to cycle the key to the on position for 2 seconds and off for 10 seconds about 10-15 times to prime the system again.

It isn't just a turn the key and all is well situation.

i changed the pump but it still won't come on. so what is the story? there is a relay somewhear? i don't see it near the fuse box. any suggestions?

ok. i replaced the map sensor two weeks ago and the temp sending unit befor that. i bought a new relay and installed that. then just to make sure i ran a hot wire from the fuses to the pump and tried to turn it over that way. it's getting fuel to the engine i am 100% certain of that. after work tonight i am going to replace the throtle body sensore and the air intake sensor. if that doesn't do it then is it safe to assume it's a clogged injector? if it is i will have to take it somewhere because i just don't have the finese i think i might need to go into the manifold.
by the way i have learned a tremendous amount from these threads. keep up the awsome job!!! thanks.

Stop replacing sensors like that.

You are just wasting money.

The sensors will not cause a no start situation.

How do you know the engine is getting fuel, do you hear the pump prime? Have you tested the pressure?
