Exhaust tip
Is it necessary to install an exhaust tip?
Why can't you just point the end down and make it not visible? Does it affect performance or sound? Just curious if it is necessary to invest in a chrome platted or stainless steel tip. I would prefer to not have a visible tip. Thanks |

I would say that it is necessary mostly because you don't want the exhaust to build up under the vehicle while sitting in traffic or just parking somewhere with the engine running. As for sound and performance, I don't think that it would make too much of a difference. In my opinion, go with the stainless steel tip.

Well it's all about styling really. And that you don't want the exhaust to build up under the car(can you say corvair?) like DaveLance said. What I did with my blazer was cut off the factory curve on the tip and then got a really nice looking black-chrome tip and now my exhaust comes right out under the right side of my rear bumper. Word to the wise though, if you spend decent money on a tip(like I did) have it welded in place because I just bolted mine on and and have had a fucking $50 tip stolen twice. If I decide to replace it this time I'm having it welded on because I'm really sick of having it stolen. Peace-

your tip on your truck sucks on that sucky stock exhaust. get a real exhaust like mine thats custom and sounds good and then put your tip on there. its like takeing a ricer and putting a 6" tip on the muffler so it looks like you have a fart cannon with out the noise which is all you did. plus yours sits so far under you bumper you can't really see it.

Never let the exhaust openly vent *under* the truck. If you have to cut the down-turned rust-tip off, put on a similar chrome/stainless tip, or a straight tip. I have a slash-cut, stainless and welded tip offset slightly to the outside and just far enough under the bumper to prevent it from getting knocked off by a "bumper car" paralell parker. It takes one idiot in a small car to wreck your exhaust with a bump if it protrudes beyond the lower bumper. Don't let exhaust go *straight* back either. In the vacuum behind the truck, exhaust can build and sometimes be pushed in through the rear vents. (Think dusty roads and how your rear glass gets packed with dust after just half a mile) If you go with a straight pipe, make sure it is offset like mine to the side to catch the airstream that slips by the rear passenger-side tire and you'll be safe and look sharp.

All,
Thank you for all the advice and recomendations. I plan on getting the Ravin Z55 exhaust with a stainless tip at Midas this week. I've been quoted anywhere from $225 to $159 plus tip from three different stores. However, I would still like to hear from someone on what type of interior noise this muffler produces. Well, the deed has been done.
The Ravin is on it's way to the shop and the tip has been ordered from completeexhaust.com (MagnaFlow stainless; 3" diameter; 7" length, angle cut). Cost being less than $200, installed. |

Nice! Good job on the hunt and installation. I saved some dough by pre-fitting it all together and then taking it to a specialty exhaust shop to have them weld everything together and weld on new hangers to mate to the existing rubber bushings. Saved myself over $100 if I just rolled it in and let the shop monkeys do it from start to finish.
