Impala, Too Big For Fwd

I dunno maybe it's just me but when I first bought my imp. I test drove on local streets and it was fine. after the transaction was done , i jumped on the highway and headed home. I could barely stay in my own lane. It was drifting all over the place. I thought the wheels where loose. it handled so squirrelly. I took it back to the dealership and ofcoarse they looked at me like i was speaking chinese. just wondering did anyone else think once you get up over 55mph it seemed uncertain. I've since then just learned to deal with it. like everything else.

My 2000 Impala was like that when I got it, control arm bushings / wheel bearings were all replaced in the front and for the most part smoothed out the ride and allowed it to keep a straight line easy.

My impala drives in a straight line when you let go of the wheel, but at 55 MPH, if you turn the wheel slightly, the car is gonna move (thankyou power assist)

Maybe you should have your alignment checked. These are great road cars and as for being too big? The Cadillac Sedan DeVille, the Bonneville, and the Riviera have been front drive for a long time and they are larger than the Impala.

Never had a problem like that. Our Impala drives smooth at speeds well over 55 mph!

Tires could also be something you could look at.

just to clear up mine, im not saying the car sucks at 55 mph, but like every car, doing 55, and onme little movement of the steering hweel will move the car.

I know what you mean. My mom gave me her 2000 Impala with only 30K on it when she was too old to drive and it took me a while to get used to it. But Impala rides much firmly and confidently after I replaced those sucker factory installed Uniroyal Tires with High performance Bridgestone Potenza tires. It runs great at 80 mph!

Have tires inflated to 40-45 psi. Should do the trick.

I have whatever tires they use for police duty on my car, they work nice too compared to the 2003 with the factory tires, blech.

I have a 2005 Impala. Steering is definently more responsive than my minivan. I was thinking after it gets some miles on it , some of the apparent zero lash will go away.

I've never had such a problem w/ my 2000. It's been smooth as anything, at speeds WELL over 55. I've always liked the "big car" ride and feel...Drives like a caprice or crown vic (car's I've driven quite a bit). I love mine, no complaints here...
