Help on subs
I been looking at the different subs around here and my friends say that JL Subs are very good. One of my other friends say that he uses MTX subs, and they sounds pretty good too. I guess its the preference. I then looked into the stats of the JL subs, and most of them had a low rms range, around 100-200w per subs and cost like $150 each at least. Then I looked into the tri-sub mtx enclosure (had 3 10" subs with 1500w total power (750rms) inside an enclosure--- at about $300 for the whole thing). They had much better stats and power. Which one is worth getting? Friends say that both of them are good. Should I just get the tri MTX because it has more power and is cheaper? Thanks

I'm probably going to be using a single 10" sub - why? If you properly power it and give it the right sized box it will sound damn good.... I had a single 12" in my 200SX that rocked before going to 4 - 10"s (hehe a little overkill). Another thing to remember is that only a few places ACTUALLY manufacturer speakers - while I can't go into details because of my job many of the brands are made by one single company - there are several exceptions however.
My advice? Get one or maybe two subs - spend the extra money on a NICE amp - build some test boxes different sizes and face them different ways and see what sounds best. Manufacturers specs aren't always the best or always the way that a box "has" to be. Good look either way and when I get started I'll let you know what I do. Chris "It aint always the size of your subs, but the motion of the cone that counts" bwahhhhahaha

JL Audio Subs/enclosures and Eclipse DVC's are probably some of the best subs on the market, especially with the new JL Audio W7's coming out. MA audio, Boston Acoustics, Cerwin-Vega, Kicker Solo-baric's, Precision Power flat-pistons and Infiniti Perfect subs are very good. MTX are good also, if your on a budget. And yes, Koojo, it is a matter preference. I believe the best thing to do is to go listen to a bunch of different subs in different sizes, quanities, enclosures, placements, cars, etc. Find someone that has them and listen to them with "your" music. Different subs have different qualities. Some may have more punch then others, some may hit lower octaves then other, some may sound better with electronic music, and some just might sound better with acoustical music, it all depends on what your ears are happy with and your wallet, so good luck :flash:

p.s. this should go for all speakers, not just subs...get what's best for you not for others.
p.s.s. just for reference lol i'm getting a full kenwood system (5-channel amp, Excelon head unit, Excelon speakers) with 1 JL 8" sub. I like Kenwood because I've never had any problems with their car-audio components, but I'm pretty sure others would disagree but...to each his own...right!?!? :frog:

All i got is 1 12" sub and 1 amp running it but I can guarantee that it could either match or beat any combo of 3 subs and a box that you can buy for $300. The fact is, subs are generally cheap. And it's easy to make them loud, any brand can make a loud sub. But the difference comes from the amount of distortion. Spend the extra money and get clean bass. Again, as I've said before, the real difference is in the amp.

When I went to the LA Auto Show I saw an orange Mazda (mp3 I think) all hooked up. I don't think there wasn't anything modified on that son of a bitch. The trunk had 4 10"s db+. The crazy thing about it is that the sound was super clean. You would here the speakers and feel as if your hearing improved by 50%. Then I saw another car with 2 12"s db+ in a box and it sounded like a broken down pinto. What I'm trying to say is that the way the Mazda was wired and speakers enclosed is what made the difference. The enclosures were fiberglass and completely sealed and they had a wierd cone shape to them. The acoustical design was awsome.

If this is of any help
From my own experiences, i prefer JL. I got a single 12W6 and it rocks. This is my second purchase, as i sold the first one when i was desperate for cash, but back then, i had one running on a Pheonix Gold M50 and hit 144dB, averaged 141dB Not too shabby for one 12 sub. Oh, i did have a Bass Cube aswell though
The most important thing though, is to get the right sub box, it can make all the difference. I design and build my own from the specs given by JL, but you could always buy JL boxes if you can afford to splash out a bit. |

dont go with a set of 3 go 2 or 4 and use a mono-block amp you get better power with them i have a mtx 1000d amp which is a 1000 watts rms not peak very strong amp and for subs for the money the mtx 8000's are really strong if you lots of bass i have the momo subs expensive but sound really good and no prefab boxes make your own using MDB board because it will sound like shit if you use cheap materail like the use in prefab
