96 Neon Fuel Pump
Here is the deal, I recently bought a used 96 model Neon, SOHC with a steel fuel tank. I filled the tank up around noon and not 3 hours later the tank was down to 3/4 of a tank. I drove it only 15 miles from work which could not account for a fuel loss of some 3 gallons.
I noticed fuel a fuel smell and fuel dripping from underneath the right side rear seat. I removed a panel from under neath the car and saw fuel spilling from a ruptured rubber plug at the fuel pump. The fuel pump runs well, I just need this rubber plug (jury-rigged replacement is underway) and I do not want to shell out $150+ for a small rubber piece (which is the drain plug on the fuel pump I believe according to my manual). Anyone know if I can buy them online? Or is a JY a better bet? johnqhitman |

Tuning Neons since '97

I don't think I have seen parts from a fuel pump available to buy online or at a store. Junkyard is probably your best bet, or a new one.

Re: 96 Neon Fuel Pump
johnqhitman,
I had the identical problem. I was unable to buy one at a junk yard or on-line. I could advise you to buy one at the dealer but that is abusively obvious and not helpful to you. Might I suggest jcn37 above described my solution as well as I could. It has worked well for 3 years. The objective is to keep the gas in, keep the dirt out, to not have another unplanned leak. You can cast a silicone seal in a latex finger. Cut off a latex glove finger tip. Fill it with silicone. slip a pen or a tube, the size of the fitting (a little smaller) into the goop. wait a day. A home made cap. |
