HELP '92 estate brake light(on back glass) doesnt work

can anyone tell me how this light works??? as i see no wires running to it but do see contacts. the bulbs r fine, but they don't light up when i press the brake. Also, the plastic around the bulbs are burnt and melted, is this from the years or r they getting to hot?

My personal experience with my '93 when that light doesn't come on is that the contacts in the casing need cleaning (cold climate = corrosion) - I carefully unbolt it from the glass and take it apart to clean those contacts. Sure seems like your bulbs got too hot - they're the right ones?

I'm not sure, I think they are the wrong ones. I just bought this car about a month ago and I noticed that that brake light didn't work. So I went and bought some replacement bulbs and found that the contcts where pretty corroded and the bulbs were much bigger in circumference than the replacements I bought.

You might need to clean the 2 spring loaded posts that stick out on top of the rear gate as well as the contact plate on the bottom of the glass. A non-working 3rd brake light might also affect your cruise control.
Good luck.
