97 jetta glx - power window problems
Hi guys! I am new to this board. I am 31 years old, and have owned my 97 jetta glx since july of 99. It is a fun car to drive. I really like the VR6 with the 5 speed manual. But....I am getting fed up with electrical problems. Especially the ones that are intermittent, like my power windows.
My windows on both passenger doors, front and rear, are not working right now. This problem has been on and off for approximately two years. The windows will work perfectly for a week or so, then they won't work at all for a few days or a few weeks. My rear passenger window hadn't worked for a few months, then it started working again...only to quit a week later. Sometimes both passenger windows work at the same time. Sometimes one works fine while the other doesn't. Today, neither window is working. I'll try to give more details. When I press the buttons for both windows (when they are not working), I can hear a "clicking" sound. It sounds to me like the switch is trying to accomplish something, but no action from the windows. The lights on both of the switches are working perfectly. I have done quite a bit of research on the net, regarding this problem. Most people I read about talk about hearing strange noises from the doors while the windows move. Another common complaint I have read is the window actually falling to the bottom of the door. I understand that these are window regulator problems, caused by a bad clip on the regulator. I don't believe my regulators are the problem in my case. I have NEVER heard strange noises when the windows are working. My windows have never fallen to the bottom of the door. My problem is one minute they work, the next minute they don't. I met a guy who had a 96 jetta GLX. He told me to check the wiring in the rubber boot near the door hinges. His car had broken wires at the rear door. I attempted to check mine at the rear passenger door, but I did not see any broken wires. I saw a couple of the wires had spots where the sheath had come off the wire, but the wire was intact. I have not checked the front passenger door harness. I took the car to a shop that specializes in volkswagens, and he said that both window motors needed to be replaced, to the tune of $1000 cdn. I'm not sure I believe that. I have had a problem on the drivers side. My drivers door wiring harness was replaced already. The shop showed me the old harness, with more than one broken wire. Since then, I have not had a problem on the drivers side with either door. Is there another possible source for this problem? Maybe it is just the window motors in both doors, but my gut tells me that's wrong. I would really appreciate any help. Thanks! |
