coilover! were do i start?

I wanna drop my civic but im not sure how much. i wanna get coilovers but i don't know much bout them. I seen them on ebay but they just springs for like $60, do they expect you to stick them on standard struts!
But i also seen full kits for like $1000. Is there a cheaper way? Can you actually put them on standard sturts? What do i need to buy? and what price am i lookin at?

Re: coilover! were do i start?

I've got beat struts with Arospeed Coilovers and the car is still stiffer than most domestics. I have some negative camber but no issues with tire tread problems or driveability. Most would say don't go that route. If you want a decent set-up you have to spend the $. If I replace my set up I'll probably go with Eibach Ground Control Coilovers and Tokico Struts.

Re: coilover! were do i start?

if you get a cheap set of coilovers, get a good set of dampers...if you have the $$$, go ahead and get some Koni yellows since they're made for lowered cars...you may have some camber issues...i say may b/c i had about a 4" drop on my 1st blue civic with no camber issues, but the same set on my next blue civic and have really bad camber issues...

but like i advise, do it right the 1st time

Re: coilover! were do i start?

ebay sleeved coilovers aren't the best, but a good set of dampers will make then preform like a champ...but won't be as good as say, Tein SS coilvers (true coilovers)

but the ebay special are nice...had aerospeed coilovers or ground control and koni agx dampers for like $400...not a bad price to start out with...but the more you know, the more you'll want to save and get something better

yeah i agree.. and the coilovers on ebay and $200-400 coilovers might more then satisfy most ppl, i prefer taking a twisty at 70mph with confidence without pushing it. seconds from my house..http://www.pahillclimb.org/Courses/Reading.htm

That is so cute! Check out the tail of the dragon. Blu knows it. Stuff like that all around where I'm at, and if you think you can take those twisties at 70mph you better have a Lotus suspension cuz you'll probably be free falling a good thousand feet to your doom...

Re: Re: coilover! were do i start?

Dont be cheap with suspension or you will regret it. After that said start of with the basics.

Are you lowering just because every other car is and you think it looks cool, or the real purpose of improved handling?
Do you need adjustable height?
Do you have the ability to set it up correctly?
What's the cars main purpose?(street, race)

Just because a car is lowered doesn't mean it handles good, even though many people think they do.

Just recently we had a kid bring in a CRX with some junk sleeves, cranked all the way down with stock struts. He raved about how good it handled, I drove and said you've got to be kidding me. The car wasn't riding on the springs, it was on the bump stops. It sure was stiff but in no way handled or rode well. We talked him into doing it the right and the look on his face after he drove it was priceless.
We used:
H&R springs
KYB AGX struts
New upper mounts
Lower ball joints were shot from the extreme lowering and harshness
Outer tie rods
St rear sway

Re: coilover! were do i start?

jackasssi, just wondering if it makes that much of a difference what size tires you have with slight drop (not all the way on sleeves). My 14s are only 5" wide and when it's windy, I can feel a tad bit of sway at 80mph. Would wider rims/tires alleviate this or is it because some of my suspension parts are old? Note, when it's not very windy, no sway... all the way passed 100mph...

Re: coilover! were do i start?

i believe it's both...but since we have a light car probably not much you can do but weigh it down with cement
