Sensor goes into the test port on the bottom of the tranny

Re: Transmission Fluid Temperature Guage

Not sure, but I thought there was a fluid temp sensor (thermistor or something) built into the trans so the control module would be able to command correct pressures etc. from -40 to 150C. Does anyone know for sure if there is or isn't?

Re: Transmission Fluid Temperature Guage

Do a google search for "transmission oil temperature sensor+4L60E". I remember reading up on one guy's site where he modified one in a CK truck to add a temp sensor, including photographs of the process. Rlith is absolutely correct however, there is a pressure test port one can back the bolt out of. Once that is done, a temperature sensor of the appropriate thread and diameter can be inserted in it's place with 3 turns of good teflon tape. If it does not fit right away, a threaded pipe adaptor can be handily used to make up the correct diameters you need. You then route your wires to your gage up into the truck through the floor pan. You could borrow a little space next to your shift cable to do this. Albert is also correct, there is a built in thermometer in the tranny. However, it's for "internal use only" as indeed, it adjusts shift pressures and TCC lock-out until it reaches operating temperatures.
