Question need help with a/c problem

hi

this may be a common problem so I hope it helps others. Well my girl's 96 sunfire 2.2 L started blowing hot air last month. I checked the low side pressure, it was empty. I took a can of R-134a and recharged the system to full. it blew cold air for about a week, then it started to blow hot air again. Took to a shop, leak tested, and was told the pressure switch was loose. it was tightened and the a/c blew cold air for about a week again. now it's blowing hot air. does anyone know the location of the a/c pressure switch? I saw a diagram of a typical a/c system and it looks like it's connected to the receiver drier. am I close? if not, can you pinpoint out to me. I've looked at various websites..autozone, napa, etc. they don't have a/c pressure switches in stock.

Re: need help with a/c problem

Hello, I was wondering if you ever found a solution to your problem? I am having a very similar problem w/my 96 Sunfire. After about 4 trips back to the garage of recharges and leak checks n fixes, the mechanic told me it was the Evaporator. He wanted to charge me twice the price of the unit itself, so I purchased it myself and I got it back. Well I guess even that was not the problem. So far a hose has been replaced, the evaporator has been replaced, it has been recharged, switches tightened, and still no cold air for more than a few days after being recharged. So if you found a fix, it sure would be helpful... Thanx

here's what happened

When I brought it in to the shop, the mechanic leak tested the car said he didn't find any leaks and said the a/c pressure sensor was loose. So he charged the a/c and sent us our way for $45. Two weeks later, the car is blowing hot air. I took a look at the pressure sensor, it wasn't loose. So I bought an a/c delco oem pressure sensor. replaced it myself. didn't do anything. still blew hot air. I took it into the same shop that advertised "complete a/c repair". I dropped it off at 8am and he didn't call back it was almost 4pm. So I called with no answer. I had to drive there. He tells me that there is a leak in the A/C COMPRESSOR. It's obvious to me they didn't want to do the work because you have to replace the entire a/c system..evaporator..condensor..compressor. The fact they didn't call me at all. Plus, he didn't detect the leak the first time I brought it in with their "leak test service" He tried to say sense there is a new pressure sensor on there, the leak happened after he leak tested it. What an idiot. He charged me 90 dollars for evacuate and recharge. He said something about lasting until winter. But I'm not going back to that place. I've decided it would be cheaper to buy the R-134a in bulk for 2-3 dollars a can and recharge it myself in the hottest part of the year. I've searched other boards and the a/c compressor is the problem. Wish I had better news.

Re: need help with a/c problem

See thread "A/C Recharge" for how to recharge the system yourself. Really easy to do. Takes about 2-3 mins and costs about $20 the first time, then just the cost of a can of refrigerant after you have the hose and gauge to do it.

MAKE SURE YOU PULL A VACUUM AND REPLACE THE FILTER/DRIER....MOISTURE IN THE SYSTEM IS YOUR ENEMY....
