Hello all,
I'm about to go outside and tackle this problem, but I'll post this to see if anyone has any suggestions in case I can't find the problem... A little history on my friend's 92: 180k miles, was his father's car up until a few months ago when he got out of the Navy. The only problems the car had until recently was the plugged EGR issue and a slight oil leak @ the cam cover. Last month, the thing died on the freeway...broken Timing belt Replaced the belt but the car still wouldn't start due to no spark. I followed the diag. tree in the manual and found the ignitor was bad. Put a new Ignitor on and the car started, but ran poorly and smoked badly. I reverified the timing 3 times before giving up and sending it out for a second opinion. The mechanic @ the shop said the Idle speed needed a slight adjustment (?! It ran great right before the belt broke) the ignition timing was slightly off, and the cam timing was off one tooth. The only conclusion I could come to was that setting the crank timing by the mark on the front cover is unreliable, therefore explaining how I had set the timing wrong. When we got the car back it ran fine, but I noticed the O2 senor was unplugged, but no codes were present, so I just left it unplugged to see what would happen. Curiously it took nearly 3 weeks before the code finally set. Now, here's the present dilemma... Yesterday, he blew a heater hose in the way to work. He managed to get the car to work, but drove it for approximateley 5 minutes with the needle in the red. I went over last night and changed the heater hose for him, reconnected the o2 sensor and cleared codes. When we refired the motor, it ran poorly just like when the timing was off. I'm am hoping that it is just a case of SP fouling or a bad O2 senor stuck reading too lean. Any suggestions would be reatly appreciated, and if I find the problem first, I'll definiteley post what the fix was. Thanx and wish me luck ;o) |

Silly me...
It was just the vacuum hose from the MAP sensor diconnected. Once it was reconnected and the fouling was blown off the spatk plugs, it ran great. |
