I got owned by an eclipse today.... (my car might be having probs, suggestions?)

Well first of all im not the racing kinda guy, but my friend has been modding his eclipse to try and race my supra so after work me and him found a location where there is no cars and a 2 lane street by the airport where we work and we played it safe, no jerking around, just to see where i stand and where he stand with his mods. We usually go to the track but i used to take my 240 out there but wanted to compare to his eclipse wich has a turbo, DP, exhaust, intake, boosted at 15, pushing about 270-280hp

Well so we lined up and when we took off i bogged the car and didnt get a good start it being my second time driving it since i bought it this saturday and was working on it since, with changing spark plugs and checking fluirs and brakes and such... so i have no launching experience on the MKIV. I do have a 240sx and i cant launch that thing higher than 2,500 otherwise ill be spinnin tires, so i think i reved the supra to about that and launched and bogged....

So.. We took off and he already got me off the line good, and since i bogged and it dropped to around 1k i had all the lag in the world. Once it started pulling my car wasnt really catching up, and i wasnt feeling much pull either, even tho it was still pulling because before i knew it i was already at the redline and shifted in 3rd and my friend was still pulling on me, so thats when i let off.

I got a vid of this, if anyone wants to see, id need someone to host it for me, its only like 3.5mb but you will see what im talking about kinda.

My friend matt who was taping told me i got a bad start, and zach with the eclipse asked me what happened and my other few friends who watched asked the same thing because they all expected me to win, and so did it... so i just told them all

Back home now and i looked at the BOV hose the one that is connected to it closer to the front of the car and i saw oil there on the hose and around the house, almost like its leaking air from there and blew some oil out, since all turbo cars have some amount of oil in the airpipes,

so im thinking im loosing boost there maybe???

Also i was thinking that maybe the BOV is bad but how do i check this, because i dont hear the stock BOV, but are you supposed to hear the stock one even a little??

Also maybe some of the vacume lines are bad? but i havent really looked into that as much as i prob should.

I have changed the spark plugs and got 6097s and oil is new and clean, everything is good, shifting good, chirping 2nd gear and sometimes 3rd

Well i hope this story wasnt super long, but i was just a little disappointed, because even if i messed up like that i should have atleast been pulling on him, but he was pulling on me more and more.

My car is all stock with me and my friend in it prob about 3850lbs give or take a few his car 270-280hp FWD around 3070 with driver

any suggestions? things you would check? Diagnostic? Dyno tune?

PS please dont recommend upgrades since i just bought the car and ill need some time to save up a little

First of all nice supra ive always dreampt of buying one. Ne way can u plz send me the vid ([email protected]) id really like to watch it and i dont think you can hear the stock bov on a stock supra cause i have been driven in many and have never heard it.
Sorry but i cant giv ne technical suport because im only 15 and dont know thats much bout tech things i know a lil but not that much to give advice.

I reved the car up only to about 2k and then dropped the clutch and the car bogged really bad and he got me from that and then i had no chance because he was already pulling on me because he was at full boost and i wasnt even at the spooling level haha, i had all the lag in the world...

I did practise launching tho now, that was only my second time driving my supra since i bought it last saturday. I now launch at abour 4k with no probs and my friend and i did a street 1/4 by this school and i got 14.4 both times, so i got better now. I did 1/4 on that same street with my 240sx and i got 16.6 there and the actual 1/4 track i got 16.2 because the distance i meassured is prob a little off so that street where i did it is pretty much whatever time i get and minus .4 and plus i had my friend in my car when i did the 1/4 on that street and its uphill at the start... so im looking at about 13.8 at the track...

ill be going to the track wednesday (5/25) so wish me luck!!

You can hear the stock BOV but you have to listen very carefully. My car when it was bone stock long ago dyno'ed at 280whp. If you friend is doing the same thing it would have come down to the start. Eclipses weigh close to the same as a MKIV so there's no advantage there, he running higher boost where as your running about 12. So if you look at the race the start is where it would count for your race with your friend.
Chances of the BOV being bad would mean ethier three things, one your car will not build boost because it would be open all the time. Two you would have blown turbos because it would be shut most likely. Or three, you have a leak in your vacum system. Re-check your vacum lines to make sure you don't have a leak, which is most likely the problem. The first things you want to do to your car when you've made sure that your car is fine is buy an intake, exhaust, downpipe, fuel cut denenser and a boost controller. A front mount intercooler would not be a bad idea but a good one from a company will cost around $1100 with hard pipes. You should be running around 18 psi with no boost controller which is safe, but before it starts to get colder outside, you might want to get a boost controller in the future. Being colder air, your turbos will force feed more air which will up your boost. I wouldn't recomend running any higher than 19 psi on premium gas and if you had higher octane gas such as 110, 116, or higher you should run about 21 psi just to be safe. After those mods, you should be easily walking that eclipse in not time.

got a major boost leak... ALSO this is why i think my BOV was not releasing pressure...

i turned on the massive aircompressor and got about 15 psi pushing out of it, because i didnt want to blow any seals and trying to play safe... and at ONLY at 15 it was leaking.... and right where i suspected... by the BOV where those 2 hoses connect to the BOV... That also explains why there was some oil there on the BOV and on the pipes in that area because it was pushing all the oil out from there.

I turned up to about 25psi and it was blowing even more... So, major boost leak. Im gonna go to autozone and see if they got some hoses so i can replace mine

Also the BOV are really hard not cracked yet, but just hard and dont bend at all... so the clams were not clamping them down hard enough. possibly if i bend them they will crack in half...


Pressure test picture haha... that foot pump thing wasnt a good idea because the engine needs more air forced in there, so i used the actualy air compressor and shot some boost in there at 30psi after i fixed the hoses and it wasnt leaking anywhere

no its just a different supra in my sig, i had that sig for some time way before i bought my supra.

Hey i just watched that clip, damn you got off on a bad start if you had of got a better start it would of been alot closer but even when you were at high revs he was still gaining so i dont know if you could of had him.
Nice clean engine bay aswell.

hooked up the greddy boost gauge tonight and ren the car and pushed it to the max... here are pictures of the boost gauge at idle... and at full boost

the full boost goes up to only 0.5 bar wich is 7psi... also i was watching the boost gauge and i could see the boost drop when the 2nd turbo kicks in... and then it goes back to 0.5 again... so its not going over 7psi and the boost stays at that boost... it does not drop at all till redline when i let off.
