Unhappy 90 Cherokee Dead!

Hello,

I went to start my jeep in the morning to go to work and it wouldn't start. It cranks like it's trying to start but won't actually turn all the way over. We recently replaced the CPS (crank positioning switch) Well, like 3 months ago! It's doing the exact thing it was when it went out the first time. Is it possible that it went out again? I'm getting so tired of everything breaking on this thing. We have put over $2,500 in parts and labor the last three months!! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Well, it's certainly possible. Check the connection.

Also, you have to determine if your Jeep won't start because of lack of fuel or lack of spark. Then you'll know where to start looking.

Re: Re: 90 Cherokee Dead!

Hi,
Thank you for getting back to me. We determined it is lack of spark.. I didn't think it was possible for something to go out so quickly. But then again, nothing surprises me anymore with this jeep! If it is the CPS again, any ideas as to what is making it go out so quickly? I have a real hard "crank" I have to crank it about 5-7 time before it starts.

Thanks!

When was the last tune-up, plugs & wires, cap & rotor. Filters air, gas. Try wiggling the connections at crank sensor, lot of times its the connections. Dale

Re: 90 Cherokee Dead!

I am having the same problem with my 96. I have a new part. I think it is a pickup or something. I will let you know if it works.

Here are 2 URLs that will link you to pages with sensor troubleshooting. It could be the CPS again or another ignition related component. As Dave suggests, have you checked/replaced the cap/rotor recently?

BTW: From the Autozone page, you van also find info on just about everything else (electrical, fuel, etc.)

Re: 90 Cherokee Dead!

I just saw another thread with a similar issue. He replaced his CPS but developed the same problem later. Turned out the the harness got caught on the exhaust and burned through. You might want to check it out.
