Unhappy Sportage revs high unexpectedly

Sportage revs high unexpectedly.

1999 2wd, auto

Engine will suddenly rev very high. Occurs when idling and going down the highway. Sometimes last a few seconds to a minute or more. Revs about 2,ooo extra rpms.

No engine light comes on at any time.

I need help as I transport my kids in this vehicle and it worries me. Thank you in advance.

First thing I would do is disconnect the battery for about five minutes to reset the computer. Reconnect the battery and see if symptom continues.

If symptom continues, try to similarities between the times it happens. For instance; if it occurs when you apply the brake, you may have a vacuum leak at the brake booster.

Re: Sportage revs high unexpectedly

the IAC (Idle Air COntrol) valve is known to play tricks..but usually this causes the engine to stall...but I'd look at this contraption anyway...it needs to be removed and cleaned in carb solvent or similar once in a while so even if not your problem at this time, this would be clever maintenance anyway.
Also, connectors all around the place are known to corrode and loose contact..
