D16 wrenchers, who are you?

Sometimes it seems hard to find people willing to stick with their D16 engines (by choice), and squeeze some more impressive performance from them. So, what I want to do, is make a role call here of some of the fine citizens on af.com who actually have done just this. Now Im talking about people who have actually worked a little, you know, F/I, new pistons/rods, port polish, blah blah blah. In other words, someone well versed in the way of the D. Bolt ons are fine, but Im looking for something deeper than i/h/e here. What Im hoping is to get a nice reference list, a who's who. Just let people know what you did with your D16, power numbers, 1/4 mile times, etc. Even if you aren't exactly willing to help answer questions for D-dummies like me, at least give us a sample of your results. (something for inspiration )

I got a D16, not really lookin into doin major engine mods though. I'm sure you could get pretty good times with one though, I just think it'd be better to have a DOHC. So I'm not touching the engine.

D16 here.....not doing a swap!!
Hopefully, in the next couple of months, I'm going to be spending a grand building up my internals. I'll be getting a new cam, pulley kit, 4-1 header, and tuning my vafc. I'll let you know the dyno results too, b/c I'm going to do a baseline run in about a month before I get all this done and then another after to compare. Plans for the future include: new rods/pistons, port/polish, and fuel injectors.

Staight up D16Z6 here! No engine swap will be done. Mods (for now) include i/h/e adj. cam gear, plugs/wires, all pullies, and personal tuning of the engine. At this point I am already pulling gt's, 250-hp maxima's, si's etc...this coming weekend: fuel rail/regulator, new clutch. And within the next few weeks:mil the head, 5-angle valve grind. Not long after that:P&P By no means am I knocking any other engine but people don't give the D16Z6 a lot of credit. I am proof that you can get some real power out of a SOHC without spending thousands because I haven't spent more than maybe 800 at most for all the mods to my car. I will not be going f/i cuz I wnt to see just how much power I can get outta this thing. Sorry I have no #'s for you but I live in New Mexico and I'm not gonna pay $60 just to see how much hp I have (I could spend that on the engine) and the nearest 1/4 track is 3 hours away. Should be going to the track soon though.

i'm even going further..hehe...
i'm building up my d15!!...my first step(which will be in a couple weeks) is slapping on a d16z6 head....the mini me swap! plus i'll be using the intake man, tb, distributor, ecu, and tranny off an ex.....the reason i'm keeping the d15 is because i'll get a better compression ratio compared to the stock ex/si block....then do a mild p/p....then i'm thinking of going with gude or crower cam/cam gear....then a 4-1 header(undecided on which one), and i'm probably gonna go with the skunk2 Invidia Rs*R exhaust......

It's to prove a point. That a SOHC 1.6 L Exgine will run you or try to run with you. It will run you past the gas station while others reup on gas.
I chirped 2nd gear by the passenger window of a V8 firebird with a sick exaust. If anything that nigga got herbed out because he has a V8 even though I didn't win.

I'm keeping my D16...
In a few months, I'm taking out a loan to have the internals built up and a turbo put on... after I start my new job as a Honda Sales Associate!

Sounds like quiet a project, I guess you count.

I just wanted to find out who has experience with the engine and getting the most from it, its nice to see a decent turn out so far.

Nemesis2000 - I would definitely like to see the dynos, before and after. Nothing like good solid numbers, and I dyno chart is a nice reference to work with. (Better than, "I feel like its faster now, and I can almost beat my buddies Type R, blah blah")

CivicOwnage - You mentioned going auto to manual, did this give you any problems? How much did it end up costing you, if you dont mind saying? Im considering this myself, for the future.

Keep it coming guys, I need these kind of threads occasionally to keep me pumped up about working with my crappy little car! :silly2:

How in the world did you get all that stuff with less than 800 dollars? If you are beating GT's and Maximas with those bolt ons alone, that is truly impressive. What i/h/e combo are you using?

Also, is that actually your car in the avatar? Im just wondering because I have the same pic from a website I found somewhere. (even had it as wallpaper for a minute)

no problem except my shifter is hitting my exhaust now no biggy just wierd ass noice in the bigging, the car works good, just some stuff still need to be fixed, during the swap, because my car is an hx it has sencors up the ying yang, so i had check engine light up on me, so i need to get that fixed which is going to be done friday, it was no biggy just some hoes or something and my bearing are making somekinda noice but overall it was done great i love it. It cost me 1600 with parts and labor, they had everthing to do the swap. all parts had less then 50k on them. So just so you know if a shop tells you 4000+ flip them the bird , cause they are trying to rip you and give you the dealer tranny deal, there refurbished 2k trannys which i dont see a point of when you can just find a 30k tranny or something and be just as good and a lot cheaper. Just find a shop that you can trust and do it when you get a chance.
