d16-b18 thermostat housing difference?

So I got a motor swap about a month and a half ago and i keep overheating when i drive it hard. I still have my stock mini civic radiator, but i have friends that run their GS-R's on the little half sized radiators and never overheat.

Today I bought a new Thermostat today and when i went to put it on i found out that i didnt even have a thermostat, so thats shitty. so i go to put it in and its too long and doesnt fit! I wonder if when I got my swap they left the d16 thermo housing attached to my lower radiator hose and then the b series thermostat wouldnt fit so they just bolted it back in without one.

has anyone else ever had a problem getting a new thermostat to fit into the housing on a b18 swap?
