97grand cherokee dies after 200 miles or so
January 24 I PAID OVER A THOUSAND BUCKS TO DEALER BECAUSE MY JEEP STARTING JUMPING AND GOING DEAD WHILE DRIVING BACK FROM A TRIP THAT WAS AS FOLLOWS: DROVE 200 MILES, STOPPED FOR COUPLE HOURS, STARTED BACK AND IT STARTED THIS BEHAVIOR AFTER 100 MILES. EACH TIME IT STARTED ACTING AS IF IT WAS OUT OF GAS, I SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL, RESTARTED, WENT ON. THEY REPLACED CRANKSHAFT SENSOR, OXYGEN SENSOR, ROTOR DISTRIB, CABLE IGNITION PACKAGE, NEW INJECTORS, TUNE UP, SUPER FUEL SERVICE.
WELL TODAY 2-15, AFTER DRIVING 225 MILES IN SAME PHASE, 190 MILES, STOP FOR 3 HOURS, START BACK, STARTED ACTING LIKE OUT OF GAS AND LIMPING, ALL THE WAY BACK FOR ANOTHER 100 MILES. IT WOULD START RIGHT UP EACH TIME BEFORE I PULLED OVER, BUT WOULD NOT GAIN SPEED RAPIDLY, THOUGH IT EVENTUALLY COULD GO 55 TO 65 FOR A WHILE , THEN REPEAT. OBVIOUSLY IT ONLY DOES THIS ON LONG TRIPS OVER 200 MILES IN ONE DAY, NEVER ACTS UP AROUND TOWN. CAN THIS BE A TRANSMISSION RELATED SENSOR PROBLEM AND NOT ANYTHING TO DO WITH ENGINE. BOTH TIMES, I HAD 1/2 TANK OF GAS.

Sounds like the Dealer did some Shotgunning which is replace enough parts to solve the problem, Which it didnt. The First thing I would check is the Fuel pressure at idle should be around 49 lbs. If the pressure is good and you have access to a guage leave the guage hooked up make sure the connection is tight and check pressure when the problem comes back. Could have a weak fuel pump and when it is hot it might start to shut down. When it is cool it will run.
Some other things to look at are the coil and Cam postion Sensor both will act the same way if there is a short. I would start with fuel pressure First. |

How many miles are on the vehicle? I'm gonna bet that the strainer on the fuel pump is ripped or gone completely and something is getting sucked into the inlet. If you have over 100,000 miles, its a good idea to change the filter and while your there, go ahead and pull the pump and look at the strainer.

yep, shotgunning seems to be the trend. Are there any such things as real accurate diagnosis by real mechanics. hell, I might be able to learn to change old part for new part and shotgun search- just takes knowing how to remove and replace. Isn't there a better way? What is fair charge for fuel pump? what about coil? thank you. |

Re: 97grand cherokee dies after 200 miles or so
This sounds exactly like the problem my GF has describing to me on her 2001 GC 4.7L. The car will start "bucking" after driving on Hwy after couple hundred miles, but will not do this in town. No engine light. Diags report misfire on injector(s). Posibilities so far seem to be: TPS sensor, CSP sensor, Fuel Pump, Pump Filter/screen, O2 Sensor, AT sensor.
My only similar past experience was with a bad TPS on a '91 XJ 4L. It would act up interm. anywhere and got worse over time until car ran like crap. I would like to know if you solve this problem. |
