Tranny braking

I have a 98 Taurus SES with the Vulcan engine with about 95k. I don't remember the transmission type, but here is the problem. While driving at highway speeds 60-70, occasionally when I let up on the gas, it feels as if someone has applied the brakes to slow down the car down. If I hit the gas again, it feels like it has shifted gears. There is no change in the tach indicating a change in engine speed. I suspect bad gas or water in the gas, but the tach doesn't indicate such. Its been intermittent as the last time this happened was several years ago. The tranny was flushed and a new filter installed about 2 years ago, or about 25k. Any ideas?

My Taurus just did that one time @ 65mph. Mine was a 93 and had 202,000 miles though. After that it had only gotten worse. Not it's possible to go 30mhp with out it feeling like someone just slammed on the brakes intermittently. It also KLUNKS back into gear. It's really pretty scary to drive. I figured it was the transmission, so I am selling it for $100 to some guy who wants it for parts. If you get it checked out and find out it's the CV Joint or something, let me know. I have to work on it 1 block away in a parking lot, and I just don't have the will or the patience to even open the hood. I'd be more than willing to replace the tranmission in it (I really do like the car), but I figure it's going to back out in 3 months. I just don't have the time or the garage or the money to deal with a car like that.

Have it looked at and drive it until it dies. You might look into getting it replaced if it's toast, but I am not sure how much a 98 with almost a 100,000 miles is worth..

I am glad they're replacing the Taurus with the Ford 500. That's a smart move for Ford.

Pete
