Question Check Engine Light Problems

The check engine light came on a few weeks ago on my 2003 Taurus SE. The car has a bit of a rough idle and I've noticed that it luggs a little or kind of misses for a second or two when driving. The car has neved died on me and I'm still getting good gas mileage, although I think I've noticed a little bit of a drop lately. I took it to Autozone and found the following code: P1131 - Fuel Error Metering Manf. Control. I've tried looking this code up and what I've found doesn't match anyone else that I've seen. Any ideas on what this could be? Thanks!!

Re: Check Engine Light Problems

Do you know exactly what mileage you are getting?

I was getting 23-26 mpg, depending on where I traveled. It seems to be more around 20 right now - I need to check my latest tank. There's only been a slight difference - of course I might just be noticing it more right now.

Re: Check Engine Light Problems

First off... sfontain... thanks a bunch for your comments on various subjects. I was finally able to resolve my check engine light condition and the engine stumbling and hesitating. I am sure you have helped many others enjoy their Taurus by offering useful suggestions.

In my situation, the EGR valve was ok, so I replaced the ignition wires and DPFE sensor... problem appears to be solved. However, I was somewhat shocked to see the cost of the DPFE sensor. A new one from a local dealer was about $150 bucks (Cdn)... 2 dealers in town, both same price. Others on forum have indicated they got one for $30... not sure where, but might be worthwhile checking around. I also found that the DPFE sensor was not located where it shows in the Hayes manual. It was actually behind the engine just to the right side... not too far from EGR valve on my 99 Taurus. It was easier to get at when I removed the valve cover which I needed to do to better change the ignition wires.

Good luck.
