air filter modification

I have an 89 Formula. I was wondering if anyone has modified the air intake to create a ram-air effect with maybe some creative cutting. The air filter just sits in the corner as it is. Would building something to grab air from underneath and blast it into the air filter canister be stupid?
I was just looking at those sweet ram air hoods on other cars and it got me to thinking. I've seen ram air hoods that will fit my Formula, but is it practical/functional? And what's the purpose of the shape of the Formula hood? Any feedback?
