iridium Plugs
Went to the local autozone to get some goodies for a tune up. Told the guy i wanted AC delco origianl plugs. (platnium) and he said all he had in AC Delco was the Iridium ones. They've replaced the platnium with these. He showed me the screen, and he was correct.
SOOOOOO, a few questions. 1. Has anyone used these yet? 2. Is what he said true? 3. Do they need to be gapped to the .060? (3.8 engine) Did some reading on web, and some say they come pregapped from factory, others say they gap them to the specs. I sure hope they perform well, for a little over $6.00 a plug. Thanks Paul |

Re: iridium Plugs
I usually check the gap, but they are almost always pre-gapped correct, unless it got dropped or something. The electrode is very stout on them, hard to bend.
I don't know anything about Delco changing from plat to iridium, I suppose it's possible. Iridium is supposed to be superior, but not in a way noticeable for street use, so it's kinda pointless, unless they cost the same. Delco plats will run 100,000 miles without fail, what more can you ask from a plug? Any improvement in discharge intensity or durability woould be hard to notice in a street application. I was going to put them in the Impala SS, but after talking to a few others who put them in the LT-1 and noticed no difference, I just stuck with stock.

I would think that they would offer both kinds, but i told the guy i wanted the Original equipment, this is what said was available.
I agree on the plugs, what more can we ask for with 100,000 miles. But I'm a bit old school i guess, and still change plugs and wires every 40,000 miles or so. Probably over kill I'm sure. We shall see what happens. Not looking for performace gain, just for the car to run well. |
