Question Buy or Don't Buy

I'm looking at a '94 2-door hatckback, 5spd (not familiar with the Excel models so sorry if it's stupid to point some of this stuff out). About 114k miles. Looks like it's been taken care of. Exhaust looks pretty new. At least the muffler. Have not driven it yet. Just wanted to know what to look for before I take a closer look at it. I know the usual stuff, but is there anything particular to the Excel that I should look for. Thanks.

Re: Buy or Don't Buy

Well even as me being a great hyundai fan and such, I will have to say don't buy it. Just because of its milage and well frankly because it is a Excell and even at low miles they are known as crap. Plus seeing how old you are plus the 4 year old silverado you have I think that you can do a bit better than the Excell. If you want a low line hyundai why dont you just get a new accent they are only like 14,000 to 15,000 dollars. So I am just advising you if you dont want the problems, or even the rep of a old Excell....dont get it.

As far as the excel I had one and it ran great for years it was a 92. They had rocker arm shaft problems but looking at the miles on your post it would have gone by now plus mine was under warranty at the time. They may have fix that problem by then. They are known to smoke a little because the valve guids go early but i had 50,000 miles on mine when i sold it.I ran synthetic oil in it and it did not burn as much. Also check if the cv joint are in good shape plus make sure it changes gears ok as well check the clutch. Mine was a automatic tranny and it was a good trans. Never had any problems with mine besides the rocker arm shaft. If they want a 1,000 bucks or less for it and nothings wrong with it buy it. The resale value on them are very low so if they dont want too much for it I would buy it. Just as long as nothing too bad is wrong with it.If you got to put too much money in it ,then its better to buy a used honda..

I have a 93 excel that has done 270K, Motor is still good, have been told that the gearboxes have a habit of going before the engines (heard daewoo its the other way around).
Had a c/o gearbox about 15000k ago
Make sure that it shifts smooth, no grinding going into 3rd above 55k, apart from that, ive had no problems with mine
