How do you feel about engine breakins?

How do you feel about engine breakins?

1. Take it easy. Never go over a certain rpm level, and slowly start increasing the maximum rpm that you go up at. Do this for about 1000 miles.

2. Be as hard on it as you possibly can. Basically run the engine to the maximum rpms under heavy load. Just be sure to change your oil every couple hundred miles.

I kind of feel that 1 is better. Number 2 is going to break it in faster, but not better.

Re: How do you feel about engine breakins?

I have no evidence to back me up here but my gut feeling is to be gentle till all the parts get to know eachother.

Re: How do you feel about engine breakins?

I have no engine, so I don't think this matter applies to me

But, I would choose #1 given the opportunity. Much safer way to do it.

I dont know if this has anything to do with it but a guy where I work bought a Mazdaspeed Protoge and started redlining the hell out of the motor since day one. 56 miles on the odometer and he wanted to race me......so I did.....and beat him. he just got a injen intake and a Greddy BOV and dynoed the sucker (3200 miles now) it dynoed at like 148 hp.
I know dynos are not 100% accurate and I also know there is alot that goes into the way you callibrate the ressults. I cant help wonder if maybe not breaking in the motor had something to do with it or if he is just giving me a fake number to try to get me to race him again.

either way I'd go with option #1

Re: How do you feel about engine breakins?

Well how much HP does the factory claim the Protege made? Does he have dyno charts to prove it.

I'd really like to get Zgringo's opinion on the subject.

160HP.

yes he has the dyno sheet but I never looked at it. I just took his word for it.

I would like to think that the engineers that designed my engine would know best how to break it in and they say to break them in easy.

On a fresh rebuild I think it is best to run conventional oil in it. Drive the car for about twenty miles and then change the oil to get out anything left over from the rebuild process and then refill with conventional oil since synthetic is said not to let the rings seal properly. After doing and easy break in for 1,000 miles you can switch to synthetic. If the rings aren't sealed by then they won't seal at all. Just follow the break in instructions in your cars owners’ manual.

Re: How do you feel about engine breakins?

i'm currently in the middle of breaking in my motorcycle. i was told that a mix of both 1 and 2 are the best way to go. take it easy keep it under 6K rpm for the majority of the 600 mile break in, but bringing it up to to 8-10,000 rpm once in a while is good because it makes the piston rings seat properly.

read this, i found it interesting:

Yeah, I read that article several times now. That's why I made this post.

Yeah, I've read that site and it sounds convincing enough. However, I still don't believe it. My family has always broken in our engines the way that the manufacture has recommended and they have been strong runners even with high mileage.

I'm with Polygon on this one!
I rather use a proven method then try a radical new technique that is as he says "controversial".

your supposed to vary RPM and not cruise at a certian speed for long periods of time.... But you don't need to be harsh on your motor.
