I just go a '89 GTI 16v. When I start the car the engine seems to idle down then die. Second try idle flutuates a little then evens out around 900-1000 rpms. This problem is also apparent when I am driving and I come to a stop or engage the clutch. The engine will idle down to about 600 rpm then up to about 1100, then down to 800 then up to 1000, then even out between 900-1000. It doesn't seem to matter if the engine is warm or cold. The issue is pretty consistent in that it occurs almost all the time.

Re: Idle issue
There should be an idle stabilizer valve that you can clean out. Also, you might want to clean any oil off the mechanical air flow meter plate (under the air intake boot) & clean out the throttle valve while you're there.

Re: Idle issue
Thanks for the tip, but: Where is this idle stablizer valve? Is it this platic cone shaped thing on the fender side next to the air filter box?
