newby car audio question

Have bought a golf gti (2000)

Great car, but having problems with the stereo. I removed the manufacturers radio, which was working fine, to replace with my sony cd player that worked fine in my old golf.

When I took out the cd player from my old car I found that the guy who installed it had cut the red wire and soldered it to the yellow one.
(Apparently this is something to do with the memory??)

Anyway, it didn't work in the new car... no power.

I replaced the fuse at the back of the cd player & bought a replacement 16 pin wiring loom, thinking that the prev cables might be damaged, but the same problem occurs.

No power seems to be getting to the cd player. the display doesn't light up etc.

I don't really want to have to pay someone to install it as I'm hoping it's a simple issue... any ideas??

Is there a seperate fuse somewhere else in car? The 'fuse box' at the side of the dash seems fine, but the display card doesn't show if a if/where there should be a fuse for the stereo.

Any help would be really appreciated.

do you have a voltage tester?
if you do, go through each wire with the key on and see if you have 12v to ground. then shut the key off and see if you still have 12v on any of the wires, should be the same one. if you don't have power than pull the fuse and test it with continuity or put a new fuse in, some times you can't tell if its blown. if your radio isn't that old look for a wire harness converter at www.crutchfield.com. I got one when I put my kenwood in my jetta. you might want to call them and explain what your doing.I'm sure they have one for your radio. makes your life much easier to just plug in connectors then having to solder stuff. plus if your radio breaks you can just plug your old one back in. good luck

Gotta pay for something any time dont you?????

Tester light cost you around 5 bucks!!!!. Just take care what you do, you don't want to blow up the airbags or the a/c compressor.

Make a search on the GOOGLE to find which are the color codes.

If you find unworthy to do all this pay for it.

yeah a test light would work fine.
you don't need a new cd player unless that one got shorted, crutchfield has cables that plug into your factory harness and match your cd player most likely. be sure to check your fuses first like I said before sometimes you cant tell if they are blown. here is a link look for these on google

working now, but not keeping memory, so radio presets don't stay after ignition goes off.

turn the key off and take it out and see what wire still has power than hook it up to the constant power of the radio to keep your presets.
