Re: accord 2000 governor

Not sure what you are asking, but if you are talking about the max governed speed, it is a function of the engine control computer, not a physical part. It can only be changed by reprogramming (i.e. performance chip)

Personally, I haven't done any ECU upgrade (modification) to my Accord and I have a 4cyl. I know a few guys who have exceeded 120 in a V6.

Check out www.v6performance.net

Re: accord 2000 governor

I had my speedo at about 131 in New Mexico last year. Mine is a 99 4cyl 4dr. It really struggles once you hit 5th gear and then starts to recover at like 124. My governor never kicked in, so I figure that my speedo must be a little off.

Yeah, I topped out at 125 in 4th gear. The problem is because the 4 bangers are really drag limited. There's not enough power to keep the cars momentum going through the air at that speed. That's why it's a little difficult in 5th gear. Also, since 5th is really the overdrive gear, the gear ratio is less than 1 which means the drive wheels are moving faster than the engines RPM's

Well, not really. It means the transmission output is moving faster than the input. What the final drive ratio does is something else altogether.

FYI, I don't know about earlier models, but the current Accord's 5th AND 4th are overdrive ratios (probably because the latest motor is a little larger).

But I agree about drag. Everyone seems to be hung up on the speed governor, but my guess is that drag's gonna get you first on anything except a pretty punched-up Accord configuration.

Re: accord 2000 governor

The stock version feels like it has pretty much run out of steam at 130. I wonder if any turboed 4cyl guys have tried for top speed?

I just checked the gear ratios and you're right, on the 7th gen (03+) 4cyl Accords both 4th and 5th gear are can be used as overdrive cause the ratio is lower than 1

Transmission Print This Page
5-speed manual w/OD
Specifications
Transmission gear ratio (1st) 3.27
Transmission gear ratio (2nd) 1.77
Transmission gear ratio (3rd) 1.15
Transmission gear ratio (4th) .87
Transmission gear ratio (5th) .66
Transmission gear ratio (reverse) 3.58

With the 6th gen Accord (98-02) it's basically the same, just 4th gear isn't as low

Transmission Print This Page
5-speed manual w/OD
Specifications
Transmission gear ratio (1st) 3.28
Transmission gear ratio (2nd) 1.80
Transmission gear ratio (3rd) 1.19
Transmission gear ratio (4th) 0.90
Transmission gear ratio (5th) 0.68
Transmission gear ratio (reverse) 3

And here's what they say about overdrive, so I guess we're both right

Overdrive
An overdrive transmission has a final gear ratio that is less than 1:1. This means the drive shaft turns faster than the engine crankshaft, permitting the vehicle to maintain a constant speed at lower RPM. At highway speeds an engine runs quieter and consumes less fuel when overdrive is engaged.
Primary Benefit:
Overdrive improves highway fuel economy. In an era of government-mandated fuel economy, the advantage of overdrive is so overwhelming that almost all manual and automatic transmissions incorporate one or more overdrive gears.

Re: accord 2000 governor

I only take issue with the term "final gear ratio." It doesn't make it clear, but if that is SUPPOSED to include the final DRIVE ratio, IMHO it's wrong.

If the "drive shaft" referred to is that in a RWD vehicle, with a separate diff, then it's sort-of OK. But it's a different story with a transaxle (like the Accord's).
