Muscle Car Grand Cherokee?
I just purchased a pre-owned 5.2l, V8 Grand and I'm enjoying it. The only problem is that once I exceed speeds of 35-40, the engine sounds loud (like the engine is strained). I just changed my fluids (oil, transmission, differential, etc.) and still it's noisy. Any ideas?

Mabey it's the exhaust? You may have an aftermarket pipe on it, and those will make the exhaust sound louder. I can't think of anything else besides that.

Re: Muscle Car Grand Cherokee?
I get this same exact sound/feeling of strained engine in the morning on hott days - and all ti was is the Fan Clutch it makes a loud moan/roaring sound. this si normal., but this noise only lasted a minute or two, and never at speed that high.

Re: Muscle Car Grand Cherokee?
It could be the viscous fan clutch like dk says or maybe the overdrive is not engaging like it should. That would make the engine rev higher and "roar more"
Try moving the fan when the engine is off. It should rotate fairly easily but with a small resistance. If it is super stiff, it may require replacement. I have a link to a "how to check" page but it is on my work computer. I'll post it tomorrow. JD |

Re: Re: Muscle Car Grand Cherokee?
It turned out to be the front differential (U Joint) and a crap load of other problems that ended up costing me three grand! So I took care of that, then a week later I had to change front rotars. That's not a big deal but then I just made a long drive from Richmond, VA and I get back and while driving, I hear this loud "clank!!!" and suddenly I can't turn! I pop the hood and my damn power steering pully just broke to peices like a cheap snap together plastic model. The serpintine belt is burnt, mangled. What a first great expereince with a Grand Cherokee. Should have stuck with my Buick Pk Ave! LOL

Re: Muscle Car Grand Cherokee?
Belt tension is adjusted at the steering pulley. Maybe ur mech tightened the belt way too tight. Did ur previous work involve belt removal?

Re: Re: Muscle Car Grand Cherokee?
Not that I'm aware of. I researched the vehicle history and no evidence of belt work, but of course that means absolutley nothing in reality. You may be right about the tension. I thought I may have heard something before it popped. It sounded like clicking but it sounded more like pistons. My Mech said that may have been the pully click clacking because it was lose. Before it popped there was a peculiar strained sound which I'm sure was the serp belt being stretched and pulled over the pully system.
