Oil pan gasket.

how common is it for the oil pan bolts to losen up over time?

I was just trying to determine the source of an oil leak on my 93 civic. Thinking it was possibly the oil pan, I snugged up a few of the bolts. Three of them were rather lose.

Re: Oil pan gasket.

you may have a bad gasket, but the bolts should have lock washers on them so they dont losen.

It is not very common. Actually I have been building cars for over 20 years and never had any work loose.......Do not overtighten them...You can make matters worse. After you wrenched em down did the leak stop?

Re: Oil pan gasket.

clean everything with simple green, then drive your car for a bit, park it, and get under there and see exactly where the leak is, then we can tell you how to fix it.

Get some degreaser and clean the area real good.......Go for a drive and check it. Will help you pinpoint the leak.

This has been a public service announcement 101.
