High idle on new (rebuilt) motor

ok so i just put in a new 305 long block into my car, hooked up all wires and hoses etc that i took off of the car before i removed the old engine. timed it (6 deg before) and overall runs good but the idle settles down at about 1800 rpm. and sometimes if the throttle is tapped it will stick up around 2000.

problem could be vacuum issues b/c when i bought car, v-line was broken and "mickey mouse" pluged so i dont know where it goes, but the car did run good w/o that line be4 the motor was changed.

btw
my car got hydrolocked bad by going through a big puddle with the previous owners custom removal of the baffles (?) and water got sprayed up to the air filters and sucked right into the motor. ouch
thank you for help in advance

Re: High idle on new (rebuilt) motor

ahhh, sorry for not looking through other posts sooner, but i've noticed that IAC valve sometimes is to blame- what is IAC and where it could be located?

IAC is the Idle Air Control motor. Located on the RH side of the throttle body, it has a square 4 pin connector on it.

thanx morley,
ive seen you a lot in other posts about tpi problems, you seen to know what you're talking about.

another problem is my fan temp switch, the one on passenger head b/t #4-6 cyl. is not connected! (no wonder why my fans dont work) there is a freyed dangling wire, color unknown too dirty, possibly white? or light color tan??
anyways, what type of connector plugs into that sensor? and what is that sensor called exaclty so i can ask for one and not sound like an idiot when trying to describe it.

update: good news

ok so i went out and bought a new (50$) IAC valve since my old one siezed up from getting water in it i guess. (the water comes from that big puddle i hit and killed my motor. see the first post^^^). The new IAC valve helped, but the problem was still there and i hadn't tried everything, so i took some of morleys advice from another post http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/t374412.html about setting the minimum air and adjusting the TPS.

long story short MORLEY RULES. thanx for your help even though you didn't directly help me, thanks.

AF RULES!!

For your fan switch connector, I believe they were a simple slide on connector like the temp sender, you can just use a lug connector (female part of a spade & lug) and slide it on the "nipple" on the end of the switch.
