87' Accord LX-i Turbo
I just got this accord with almost 250,000 miles on it and it feels a little too underpowered. its 0-60 time is about 10 sec or so but i want to get it to about 6 or maby less. I dont realy care about top end or 1/4 mile because i will be mostly rallying it offroad where i wont realy go any faster than 80 at the most.
Anyways i was thinking of maby putting on a t25 turbo from a 2g eclipse or maby a b13/b14 dsm turbo from a junkyard and i was wondering how much boost this car can take on stock internals. A friend of mine tells me that this accord came with an A class motor (A20A3 2.0 12V SOHC PGM-FI 1955) and it can take around 15-17 psi stock. I dont realy know anything about honda or any Japanese engines, but that seems pretty high for any stock motor and i wanted to get your opinions before i do anything. thanks |

Re: 87' Accord LX-i Turbo
Why put a turbo in a 87 Accord with 250,000 miles? That's going to leave a hole in your pocket and a car that's not going to last you very much longer. But if you're really planning on doing it, then work on the internals and leave it as is.

Re: 87' Accord LX-i Turbo
I would turbo it to get more power of course. And a junkyard turbo setup isnt as expensive as you might think.
I have a friend with a few 14b that he will let go for pretty cheap. you guys think i should do an engine swap before i go turbo? Whats an easy engine to swap into the accord that wont cost a lot? Ide realy like to get some more torq especialy so maby a 20b? |

Quote:
Turbo boost (or any kind of boost) puts a lot of additional stress on pistons, con rods, rod bearings and mains, an engine with that kind of mileage (even a Honda ) probably would come apart pretty soon after doing that. It would be better to rebuild the bottom end and put on an improved head if one exists for that motor, then see if it needs boosting. THEN set up a turbo with confidence. Some OEM heads can't flow the additional airflow from a turbo, so it's a wasted mod, for the most part. Don't know about your particular engine.

Re: 87' Accord LX-i Turbo
thats a realy good point, i didnt think of that.
I did some searching and found that there isnt much in the way of aftermarket on the A class motor so it might be hard to find performance parts for it. Im leaning twords a B class engine swap, i have to do some more reading. Just printed out some pages on vtec

Re: 87' Accord LX-i Turbo
To turbo the a20's you have to have a custom turbo manifold. Nobody makes them. And yes i would get the motor rebuilt. As for swaps next to nothing goes in. With b16's you will need to make your own mounts and then there is an older B20 that you can put in but is a pain to find and still needs things done to make it work.
